Online Trauma Therapy for Clients in the UK, USA, Canada & Australia

Trauma therapy is for those who carry difficult or overwhelming experiences that continue to affect everyday life — through strong emotional reactions, inner restlessness, chronic stress, relationship challenges, or a sense of being stuck in old patterns.

Trauma is not only about what happened in the past, but about how the nervous system experienced and stored those events. Many people live with the effects of trauma without necessarily identifying their experiences as “trauma.” Even so, the body and nervous system may continue to react as if the threat is still present.

In my trauma therapy work, I use a combination of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brainspotting. These trauma-focused methods are designed to help the brain and nervous system process distressing memories and experiences in a more adaptive way, so they no longer trigger the same intensity of emotional or physical reactions in the present.

Big T and Small t Trauma

Many people associate trauma with what is often referred to as Big T trauma, such as:

  • Accidents

  • Violence or abuse

  • Threats to life or physical safety

  • War, displacement, or natural disasters

  • Serious medical events

These experiences can lead to clear trauma responses such as PTSD, anxiety, flashbacks, or strong bodily activation.

At the same time, there is also what is commonly called Small t trauma. These are experiences that may not feel dramatic on their own, but that can have a significant cumulative impact on self-esteem, emotional safety, and relationships over time. Examples include:

  • Emotional neglect or lack of attunement

  • Growing up with frequent criticism

  • Unpredictability in close relationships

  • Not being seen, heard, or emotionally met

  • Long-term stress without adequate support

  • Repeated experiences of rejection or insecurity

Such experiences can shape how the nervous system learns to protect itself and may lead to patterns such as over-adaptation, withdrawal, inner tension, low self-worth, or difficulty trusting others.

When the Body Remembers What the Mind Has Forgotten

A central aspect of trauma is that it is often stored emotionally and physically — not only as conscious memories. Even when you rationally know that you are safe, the body may still respond with:

  • Anxiety or inner restlessness

  • Muscle tension

  • Strong reactions in relationships

  • Emotional numbness or disconnection

  • Sleep difficulties

  • A persistent sense of being “on guard”

This does not mean that something is wrong with you. It often means that your nervous system learned to protect you based on earlier experiences.

How EMDR and Brainspotting Support Trauma Therapy

EMDR and Brainspotting are trauma-focused approaches that help the brain process distressing memories and experiences in a more integrated and regulated way.

Rather than only talking about what happened, we work with how experiences are stored in the nervous system. This can reduce the emotional and physical activation connected to memories, allowing them to be experienced as something that happened in the past — rather than something that still feels as if it is happening now.

I use EMDR and Brainspotting together and adapt the methods individually. You do not need to choose between them — it is my responsibility to assess which approach, or combination, is most appropriate for you and your situation.

Trauma Therapy May Be Helpful If You Experience:

  • PTSD or trauma-related symptoms

  • Anxiety or inner unrest without a clear cause

  • Strong emotional reactions or emotional overwhelm

  • Relationship triggers or over-reactions

  • Feeling stuck in repeating patterns

  • Emotional numbness or disconnection

  • Long-term stress or emotional strain

  • Physical symptoms without a clear medical explanation

Safety, Pacing, and Regulation

Trauma therapy is not about pushing through painful memories. The work takes place at a pace that is adapted to your capacity and readiness. Safety, stabilisation, and nervous-system regulation are always part of the process.

The goal is to strengthen your nervous system’s sense of safety in the present, while gradually and carefully processing distressing experiences in a manageable way.

Practical Information

I offer trauma therapy online for clients in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia, as well as in person in Oslo. Sessions are individually adapted and can be combined with guidance, talk therapy, or stress management when appropriate.

Trauma therapy is not about defining you by what happened in the past, but about giving your nervous system the opportunity to update its sense of safety. With the right support, many people experience reduced inner unrest, greater emotional stability, and increased capacity to live their lives with more freedom and ease.
